The Chief, Sir Lachlan Maclean, launched the Duart Castle Restoration Appeal.  Duart Castle is in urgent need of structural repairs and the maintenance of the building requires a commitment of resources on a continuing basis in the future. In the short term, essential repairs costing about 1.2 million pounds must be carried out to stop water intrusion and the continuing damage. Historic Scotland and Sir Lachlan and family have committed 50% of the cost of these repairs. The worldwide appeal is seeking to make up the balance.

Clan Maclean Association Western Australia has sent a donation from the Clan and some individual members have done likewise, but we hope that many more of you will support this very worthwhile cause. Donations can be made directly to the appeal in Scotland (see the Clan Maclean Scotland website) All donations will be receipted and acknowledged.

Members and friends were welcomed on Sunday, 20 September to the Annual Luncheon at the Osborne Park Bowling Club in Tuart Hill. This was a perfect venue for the Clan and the large gathering of members and friends enjoyed a wonderful entertaining afternoon.

We followed tradition with the reciting of the Selkirk Grace, piping in and address to the Haggis and a Toast to our Chief. Entertainment was provided by Alasdair MacKerron reciting the Burns’ poem Tam O’Shanter and a mini band from Perth Highland playing a nice variety of tunes.

Perth Kilt Run Challenge - competitor Malcolm Maclean
The annual Armadale Highland Gathering was held at Minnawarra Park, Armadale on Sunday, 13 September, 2015.

The day started with the Kilt Run, which is a challenge initiated by folk in Perth Ontario Canada to Perth Scotland and Perth Western Australia for the most participants in the event in kilts. It marked the commencement of the day with an incredible number of participants. Malcolm Maclean finishing the 2015 Kilt Run in Armadale

A highlight was provided by our Clan Honorary Piper Malcolm MacLean who ran the five kilometre course in his full weight Hunting Maclean kilt, playing his bagpipes at the same time. He then changed into his band kilt to compete in the Pipe Band Championships as Pipe Major of Perth Highland Pipe Band which was ultimately successful in its grade.

The Armadale Highland Gathering organisers wrote to our Clan after the event commending Malcolm for his efforts. He also promoted the gathering by being interviewed on ABC radio prior to the event.

We set up our Clan Maclean stall at the Gathering and are most grateful to those who were in attendance.

In March the Clan held a picnic breakfast at Matilda Bay on the Swan River. It was a beautiful morning and those who were able to attend had breakfast and a good chat and were entertained by our Clan pipers Peter MacLean and John Pool.
